The Tale of Aurelio Mandalari

Post by Doyler on Tue Jul 13, 2010 2:56 pm

I've been working on this for a little while, not too sure if it's good or not, I'm just sick of seeing it on my desktop, feel the need to share it.
I might or might not update it frequently.

Spoiler:
In a time long ago, in a place far from here, a man was born.
No ordinary man, but a man of wisdom and strength, who would rid the world of the Easterners, at least for a time.
His name was Aurelio Mandalari, and he was a skilled Venetian Merchant, many said "gold flowed from his fingertips"
But this was not the case, at the young age of 21 he was able to charm the money out of unsuspecting lady's purses. Not a very nice business, in some cases.

But young Aurelio's fortunes were about to change, starting with his being arrested, a blessing in disguise, as it would later show.

The sun's first ray's shone through the dusty morning air, cutting a wide swath of light through the relative darkness of Venice's canal-streets.
The light of the sun glittered and glinted off pieces of metal, and off the water's sewery surface.
Aurelio stirred, after a long night's "bargaining". It was a tough life, a Venetian merchants, especially in a family of bankers, of which mercantilism was seen as a lowlier craft than that of "the books".
"Signore Mandalari, please wake up, it is time for market, and if you are late you may not get many sales." a voice cut through the silence of the early morning.
"Leave me, you idiota..."
Whack.
"Ow what was that for?" Aurelio said angrily, but still somewhat sluggishly. "You know how bad it was yesterday, and how hard it is for me to leave the land of dreams and happiness to this..."
"I'll hit you again if you don't get up!" shouted his madre.
"Alright alright! I'll be down now," said Aurelio, rubbing the back of his head. "In the name of the Good Lord I will make a decent sale today..." He stood up, dressed himself hurredyly and went to the pantry for a light mid-morning snack.

After a fitting meal of bread and some ale, Aurelio began the long treck to the Markets. Whilst negotiating his way through the absurdly thick morning crowds, Aurelio finally found a decent place to "pitch up" and ready for the coming slog.

At roughly noon Aurelio began to tire of this constant bickering for a sale, tired of this whole job. If only he'd taken his padre's offer to buy him a shop, instead of this stall business. After all, it was impossible to sell gold from a stall. But Aurelio had thought he'd be selling all types of things. Wrong, as always, the sheer idiocy of his situation was astouding. He could sell products, yes, but he had taken a loan from a rival bank of his families. Big mistake, causing his father to kick him out of the house, sending him to his friends house to stay. Staying in another family's home, the epitome of being court jester-worthy.
"Time for a change of occupation, in my best interests..." Aurelio muttered to himself, moving through the bustling Venetian city-streets.
It was good to be on dry land again, if only for a short time.
"Excuse me, signore, I could not help but overhear you that you needed a job?" Some man blocked his way, he wore a Guard's uniform, but was too small to be a Guard. A Messenger, perchance?
"No, amico, I am fine..." Aurelio said hesitantly. Was this a chance to get out of his wrut? Maybe.
"No, no, signore, you misunderstand me. I am telling you to follow, either come willingly or I will get the rest of this little party of ours to take a little target practice with some knives, or if you're feeling foolish, arrows. We can shoot arrows better than throw knives, and we have many of both. What'll it be, contadino?"
"I'll follow, if you'll lead, and not kill me, signore." He replied, the hairs on his neck standing on end, his breath came in short gasps.
"Good choice, but it would have been most amusing to see you shot." The Guard said, with a fiendish smile, almost saying 'don't try run, or you'll be in trouble' with his expression, and a strange twinkle in his eye. "Now... amico, follow, if you know what's best."
Off they went, Aurelio in the middle of 10 or so guards, almost like an escort, but more like a capture of an enemy soldier.

After some time of winding through the streets, even taking a gondola down the canals for a time, the group began to near it's destination, Aurelio felt.
After no-one having spoken for quite a long time, from the last insults and threats, in fact, the silence had begun to almost welcome Aurelio.
Alas, like many things dear to Aurelio, this was to be broken in soon, shattered by that annoying Messenger.
"So, idiota, have you ever met anyone of power before?"
Aurelio opened his mouth but a guard to his right smashed him over the head with a gauntleted fist. He wasn't going to make the mistake of trying to talk again.
"Don't try talk, idiota, I'm not going to listen anyway, so it makes no difference if you've met the Doge before, you'll meet him soon enough."
Aurelio was agast to discover this, after all, greeting a Doge, and THE Doge of Venice, no less, in such scruffy, dirty clothes was unacceptable.
He was going to meet Doge Massimo Ancelotti de Venezia... What was he going to offer? What was he going to say? Would he recognise Aurelio? After all the Ancelotti's bank was basically managed by the Mandalari's, and Aurelio's father had probably met the Doge a few times. Would it be enough to make Aurelio's father, and consequently Aurelio, memorable?
"Time will tell, as my father would say..." thought Aurelio. "Or would it?"

Spoiler:
"Oi, maggot, stop thinking to yourself or I'll 'ave your 'ead!"
Aurelio snapped out of his reverie, and gazed around. They were at the steps of the Doge's "Grande Casa di Venezia". It was a very intimidating, and looked quite like a castle.
The streets around it were just large canals, purposefully built to be three times the average canal size, with evidently deep, and clean water. This castle loomed over Aurelio, taunting him with it's unlimited space, it's impregnable walls and singular entrance by land (by a draw-bridge) and the singular entrance by sea (small quay facilities).
"What would happen if you, Signore, made a break for it?" The bastard Guard said, almost reading Aurelio's mind, and making him feel even more insecure.
"Well, you'd get shot to death by those archers up there" The Guard pointed up at the windows and smiled.
"And you'd also be stabbed by il mio amico here, who conveniently is holding a Halberd that's... aimed, just a little bit, at your back."
"Not feeling so courageous now eh?"
For the first time, Aurelio felt it wise to talk.
"Why is the Doge this much of an uncivilized idiota?" He asked, feeling death inch ever so much closer to him.
The Guard's expression went from mild contempt to unrivalled anger and loathing in a matter of seconds.
The Guard moved close to Aurelio, so close Aurelio could feel his hot, steaming breath, and smell the putrid stink of a thousand days dead cow. The Guard slowly drew a dagger from his sheath on his back, and moved his head so close to Aurelio's that he almost headbutted him, slowly raising the dagger to Aurelio's neck.
The stench was sickening, making Aurelio feel sick.
A flash of movement, then a shout of "Tu estupido bastardo!" and a resounding crack.
Aurelio fell to the ground eyes lulling in his head. Why did he...
He struggled to stand, falling to the ground, starting to crawl his way away.
"Grab him!" The Guard screamed, running towards Aurelio.
The Guard screamed at him, making Aurelio look at him, which proved idiotic when the Guard pressed his foot to Aurelio's neck, pushing him into submission.
"I'll take you to see the Doge now, if you'll stop your foolish antics."
"Sí..." Aurelio managed, albeit faintly, to utter.
And on they went.

Put in spoilers so it doesn't screw the page hard.
Tell me what you think.

(rough guide, imagine it in Venice, with canals, a draw bridge and a large moat with a small quay at the back)
Updated the OP with it, aswell.

You better. I can tell you that it would not be a fun experience to be hunted down by a Marrakian Assassin and his war camel.

Sad I've really lost interest in this... I'll be "discontinuing" this for the moment, I may come back and update every now and again, but it's not likely.
Sorry guys.
